Bivins Gallery Hosts Exclusive Exhibition Featuring Early Works by Artist Jack Whitten: April 1 Through May 6, 2017

Opening reception on Sat., April 1, 2017, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bivins Gallery in the Uptown Dallas Crescent complex.

Dallas, Texas, March 28, 2017 (Newswire) -​​​​​​​​​Showcased in the main gallery, Jack Whitten: Earlier Works will run from April 1 through May 6, 2017 at Bivins Gallery. Karen and Michael Bivins will host a reception to open the exhibition on Sat., April 1, 2017, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the gallery. Complimentary valet parking is provided for the opening as well as for all guests visiting Bivins Gallery anytime during its normal business hours.

The upcoming exhibition includes a unique body of Whitten’s work created during the late 1960s – between 1964 and 1969 – referencing music, politics, race, and cosmology. This collection by the notable artist with an esteemed 50-year career was inspired by the political and social unrest of the times, as well as his personal relationships with Willem de Kooning, Martin Luther King, Jr., Miles Davis, Philip Guston, and Franz Kline.

“The balanced chaos of Jack Whitten’s vibrant and abstract art was created using a variety of innovative methods we believe gallery guests and collectors will enjoy,” said Karen Bivins. “This exhibition is a comprehensive representation of Whitten’s earlier style and provides a glimpse into the development of his extensive and decorated career.”

The recipient of numerous honors and accolades, in 2016 Whitten was presented with the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama. Also in 2016, he received an honorary doctorate from Brandeis University and was inducted into the National Academy Museum and School. Jack Whitten’s work can be found in a number of national and international museums including MoMA, the Whitney, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Tate.
