While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to become a major success, its writers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are setting up their next project. THR reports that the writers of the Beetlejuice sequel are set to produce a movie adaptation of Ice Cream Man, the horror anthology comic written and created by W. Maxwell Prince.

Screen Gems recently acquired the rights to Ice Cream Man and is in early development on the movie. Gough and Millar will produce through their Millar Gough Ink banner, and Aaron Schmidt will also produce for the company. The search is currently on for a writer. The comic tells a series of loosely connected horror stories which typically share the common link of Rick, an ice cream man whose motives are mysterious. Sometimes friend, sometimes foe, Rick uses his inexplicable powers to string together tales of woe and wonder. The series is illustrated by Martin Morazzo with colours by Chris O’Halloran.

This isn’t the first time that Ice Cream Man has been destined for Hollywood. It was initially set up to be developed as a series at UCP. Two years later, the series jumped ship to Quibi, the short-form streaming service that was shut down just eight months after it launched.

As for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the film has been praised as a return to form for director Tim Burton, with our own Chris Bumbray calling it the director’s “most energetic, playful, and creative film in years.” He continued, “Truth be told, I was wary of a Beetlejuice sequel, as I figured they should leave well enough alone after thirty-six years. Los Angeles, CA, March 29, 2016 (Newswire.com) - Los Angeles based wedding photographer Leon Jimenez who owns Cloak Photography was photographing a wedding and the bride looked stunning in her beautiful wedding dress. The particular space she was in not so much. He had an idea for a shot in his mind and the venue had a lovely bridal suite but the Bride had broken her back months before the wedding and was not up to make the trek back to the suite so Leon said, "don't worry I will change the background." Leon has 18 years of ​ Photoshop experience and was feeling confident at the time in his skills to pull it off. "I didn't even start working on the image for weeks. I really thought it I might have bit off more than I could chew," he admits.

The final result was simply, "WOW". The location's "unfinished basement look" was transformed into an creamy urban-meets-contemporary chic living room and a photo that would give any bride the chills.

When Leon first did a photo where he swapped the background he says he asked other photographers if he is allowed to do that. He remembers one particular response, “why not?”. “I was not doing photojournalism. My bride was the client and it came down to what she wanted”, he says “ “I honestly am trying to create beautiful art”, he continues. “I see certain photos as a starting off point for the creative process. Of course these are extreme examples. Most edits the couple won't even realize anything was changed. Removing exit signs, waiters in the background, adding lights. Whatever the image calls for.”

Los Angeles has more wedding photographers than any other city in the world. “It's extremely competitive in L.A and these photos have helped me get noticed by brides”, Leon admits. As for the future Leon would like to expand his canvas. “I really want to travel outside of L.A. and shoot destination weddings or new interesting places. But until then I will just fake locations in Photoshop,” he says with a wink.

Now that the spooky season is upon us, the Marvel Universe will be getting in on the wicked fun with Kathryn Hahn’s new horror series Agatha All Along. The WandaVision spin-off follows not only Agatha Harkness, but a whole coven of witches. Entertainment Weekly has a new preview for what’s in store for viewers on this upcoming season of the show. As WandaVision took audiences through the different eras of family sitcoms, Agatha All Along will similarly play with tributes to the famous witches of pop culture history.

Hahn talks about how the show gave her the privilege of emulating one of the most famous of characters — the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. Hahn stated that it “was also a childhood dream come true.” Meanwhile, her co-star, Patti LuPone, would don numerous crowns as Glinda, “I think I speak for a lot of us, we were breathless when we got to see Patti as a good witch for that first time,” Hahn recalls. “It was so dear and perfect, and just the sweetest thing — not words that you would normally [use to] describe this powerhouse on a stage.”

Another sequence in the show will see the coven face one of many trials as “a Fleetwood Mac-style band.” Showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained, “We’re in ‘Season of the Witch’ and that kind of thing. It doesn’t have that same abundantly clear thread, but it was our system to be able to pull that fun into the show.” Agatha’s witch coven will be in their Stevie Nicks “white witch”-era during this part of the trial, and it is said that the scene will involve a bit of music.

When Theo Travis began experimenting with long-form improvised instrumentals for duduk - a woodwind instrument from Armenia sometimes described as ‘the saddest sounding instrument in the world’ - he could hardly have imagined a world in which such a one-hour piece would clock up in excess of a million plays on YouTube. Yet that is precisely what happened, with the multi-functional music finding fans purely in its own terms as well as for an array of uses from meditation to yoga, to relaxation and more. After traversing a long and winding road, the saga of detective Harry Bosch is coming to an end with the conclusion of Bosch: Legacy Season 3. Michael Connelly, whose Harry Bosch novels serve as source material for the series, announced on Instagram on Friday that the latest iteration of the character’s episodic exploits is ending.

“It’s been an amazing run with this character so far,” Connelly wrote. “There’s that over-used phrase ‘It takes a village,’ so I’ll just say, it takes at least a whole town to make a show like this. We’ve had the best people up and down the call sheet. Actors, writers, directors, producers, and all the crew tried to make something special, and they certainly did. I’m very proud of what we did.”

While fans could be upset about the cancelation of Bosch: Legacy, Connelly is thrilled about how actor Titus Welliver brought the character to life, beginning with the original series in 2014. “He became the full embodiment of Harry Bosch and that was the magic that fueled 10 seasons. As the guy who writes the books, I can’t tell you how lucky I got when he signed on.”

Thankfully, Bosch: Legacy Season 3 won’t be the last time we step foot on Connelly’s police procedural. A spinoff revolving around the cold case detective Renee Ballard, played by Maggie Q (The Divergent series, Priest, The Family Plan), is developing at Prime Video.

The video follows the song’s storyline and features compelling imagery that begins with Tori’s ride (with her French Bulldog Lucky at her side) down a scarcely travelled two-lane country road. During the journey Martin’s pace slows and the tension unwinds as she is caught behind a pickup truck with a dog in the back (played by her own beloved Golden Retriever, Daisy), cattle by the roadside and pedestrians at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. The turtle speed only encourages Tori’s animated singing, as she faithfully follows the road to a little white church where she shows some slick dance moves before trading vocal licks with a fiddler (Scarlett Deering) and a guitarist (her own band member, Austin Gardea). Cameo appearances feature Tori’s horse Butterscotch, gorgeous Texas sunsets and a campfire setting with friends.

Born in sunny Ft. Walton Beach, Florida this military brat lived in several states before landing in Azle, Texas at the age of seven. She spent most of her life just outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth area where she began singing in the local church choir. The official Toho film, Godzilla Minus One, took the world by storm by not only making a big splash in its native Japanese market, but the film would do gangbusters in its humble releasing in America. It took some time before the critically acclaimed Kaiju film would finally be available for home audiences. Sometimes a movie can be a best horror movie you never saw candidate but there are other instances where a movie has been seen and talked about but altogether lost to time. Richard Stanley has had a long career in terms of time he has been active but a very small amount of output in terms of actual number of projects. While the saga of his journey to direct the big budget remake of The Island of Doctor Moreau and subsequent firing has been widely captured in the documentary Lost Soul and his latest success with The Color Out of Space was highly regarded but tinged with controversial allegations, he had a couple of gems before all that. Dust Devil, his sophomore effort, still very much so belongs in the Best Horror You Never Saw category and I will get to that one too, but Hardware (pick up a copy at THIS LINK) is such a unique animal that I had the urge to revisit and remember why I dug it all those years ago.

Richard Stanley started his career with a few short movies ranging from 10 minutes to 45 minutes and a couple of these short excursions led to his first two feature films. While these short films got him notices, the South African Filmmaker cut his teeth on music videos before getting the chance to make a post-apocalyptic feature length film. It was somehow shot and made for less than a million dollars, but it looks a lot better. While it excels at utilizing minimal locations, the actors in it and practical effects go a long way to give it a much bigger budget feeling. The Weinstein Brothers picked it up for distribution but not with Miramax. The movie was released in September and October of 1990 by Millimeter Films which was their earlier production company. It made back 5.7 million and had middling reviews but more importantly showed that Stanley was a director who could get a movie made and have it be successful.

The movie was called derivative of things like Alien and Terminator for obvious reasons. The central robot stalker could be right out of Skynet’s early arsenal to go after John Connor and the isolation and claustrophobia the seethes into almost every scene after the first 20 minutes wears it’s inspiration of fleeing the xenomorph on its futuristic sleeve. Going beyond that though, the movie had more inspiration to it whether it was intentional or not. While its admitted and direct inspirations were from the works of Philip K Dick, Damnation Alley, and Soylent Green, it bared a little too much resemblance to a comic called SHOCK that appeared in the weekly British sci fi comic 2000 AD in 1980. The creators sued and were successful enough to not only get the writer’s credit but also get a little based on blurb in later releases of the movie. Think Terminator having to acknowledge the great Harlan Ellison and his story Soldier from Tomorrow.

It follows a man named Mo who buys the head of a scrap robot that was found by a wanderer. Mo’s girlfriend is an artist and he gives the head to her to use in her sculptures as a gift but later finds out that the robot may have been something called a Mark 13. He goes back to his friend at the junker area but he is dead and by the time he goes back, the robot head has used the rest of the scrap to make a body and begins to wreak havoc. It kills a peeping tom neighbor and the security team among others but also one of the main characters before Jill figures out its weakness and stops it once and for all. Well, at least that one, as the government has apparently approved the Mark 13 for mass production.

The cast is filled with fun musician cameos like Iggy Pop as the voice of Angry Bob on the radio and Lemmy, who if Airheads taught us anything, is God, as a post-apocalyptic cabbie. The other actors in it include Mark Northover who you may recognize from Willow, John Lynch who would go on to show up in the TV series The Terror and 2024’s The Watchers, and William Hootkins. Hootkins would end up with over 120 credits to his name but will probably forever be known as Porkins or Red Six from Star Wars. That’s a shame as he would appear in a ridiculous amount of stuff from Flash Gordon to Indiana Jones to Batman and even play a character called John Carpenter in Death Machine. Some of his dialogue and actions here though make this his most unnerving and unforgettable role.

The two leads, not including the killer robot, are played by the gorgeous Stacey Travis, who went redhead for the role, and a young Dylan McDermott in only his 6th role. Travis’s first role would be in Phantasm 2 but she would go on to appear in other genre fare like Venom, Dracula Rising, and Deadly Dreams. McDermott would also show up in a killer episode of Tales from the Crypt but also have a good run on American Horror Story. Its 94 minutes go by fast, especially after the initial conceit for the movie kicks in and it’s a shame that its so damn hard to come by. My favorite designer label for horror movies, Severin Films, had an awesome region free Blu-ray in 2009 but it is long since out of print and the movie never streams anywhere. I hate to say this, but you need to watch this movie any way you can.

While Stanley hasn’t done that many movies, he certainly has a flair for storytelling and visuals with an emphasis on the last part. The colors overwhelm at times with the wasteland being a brown dreamscape of fuzzy textures and sounds and when the building of the main characters loses power, the red color is oppressive in its danger. There are a lot of views from the robot’s point of view or the pervy neighbors’ night vision cameras that ensure very few shots and angles will be the same even with the previously stated use of very few locations and environments. One thing that I don’t think gets enough attention is the score which is done by Simon Boswell who also did movies like Santa Sangre, The Crying Game, and Stanley’s own Dust Devil from a couple years after.

As I said, there are a bunch of reasons why the movie works so well including the actors, score, direction, and overall story but there are three things that really stand out. The first one is how gory the movie is. It was almost an X rating due to the violence and boy does it still deliver on this. The kills in the movie don’t happen as frequently as other horror movies but when they happen, they are glorious. Or maybe gorious. The first one kind of tricks you here too as the shop owner doesn’t get more than some poisoning before he dies. From then on though, its pretty brutal. The pervy neighbor played by Hootkins goes over to open the blinds so he can continue his perviness and the kill bot is waiting for him. It injects him with poison, or acid its kind of hard to tell, removes his eyes and then drills into his midsection. I tell you this because my editor probably won’t be able to show you much of anything here. Our hero is next an even if his actual death isn’t as violent, it’s still harsh and we get some good arm gore. Finally, the two security members for the building get ripped apart and shot when they try to stop the robot.

The second thing that stood out to me, and I already spoiled it so I’ll lean into that, is the creative decision to have the art sculptor be the hero and not only kill of Dylan McDermott before the final fight but also not have him be involved in much of the action. It’s not reinventing the wheel but absolutely sets itself up as a more traditional hero complex with the guy saving the girl. She holds her own in less of a Sarah Connor in T2 and more like Ripley from Alien. Jill may be a sculptor in the beginning of the movie, but she also isn’t dumb or helpless. She uses her quick thinking and whatever she has in her apartment to go on both the defense and the attack of her pursuer. She more than holds her own and in fact figures out a way to stop the thing permanently in what turns out to be a fairly easy trick in line with War of the Worlds aliens being stopped by the common cold or the invaders from Signs not realizing that the planet they invaded is 71% covered in the thing that can kill them. Whoops.

The final thing that gives this movie so much damn charm is what it isn’t. The movie, possible plagiarism aside, doesn’t do a whole lot new but it does do it differently which means something. Unlike his second feature Dust Devil which I didn’t fully get when I initially saw it, this movie appeals to nearly anyone looking for a good time, especially a teenager who thought this was kind of forbidden fruit. It has a dash of sex and nudity, a post-apocalyptic setting that speaks to gamers and sci fi aficionado’s alike, more gore than you expect after the slightly sleepy first act, and just fun characters and concepts. As a first feature film it shows a lot of promise for a young filmmaker with a ton of ideas. The gore had to be trimmed to get its R rating and Stanley had a sequel planned that would follow Jill as she tried to stop the remainder of the robots from being used and potentially taking over the world. Sadly, much like many of Stanley’s projects that were planned like a trilogy for H.P. Lovecraft, this wasn’t to be.

Hardware is a great time and it’s a shame that it isn’t easier to find. Sure, you can get a used copy of that Severin disc that I talked about but $100 can be a hard pill to swallow even if the thing was brand new. It’s possible that we could get a future physical release, or you could always import a copy from another region if you have the means and, if you’ll excuse me, Hardware but for now I’d say if you can catch it somewhere then consider yourself lucky. It’s the type of movie that rarely gets made anymore and while that’s a bummer, it’s nice to know these still exist and maybe inspire filmmakers in the future.

The Ghost with the Most returns to theaters this weekend for Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice after 36 years of waiting in the Neitherworld Waiting Room! Fans of Michael Keaton’s corpse-like con man are dying to see for themselves what Beetlejuice and his co-stars have cooked up for the long-gestating sequel, with Winona Ryder returning as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz for another paranormal soiree.

Jenna Ortega joins the cast as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, with Justin Theroux playing Rory, Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson, Monica Belluci as Delores, and Arthur Conti as Jeremy. The sequel begins with the surviving Deetz family returning to Winter River after a tragedy. Discovering the house is still haunted by Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), Lydia’s life gets turned upside down when Astrid accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. With no choice but to enlist Beetlejuice to help rescue Astrid from the Neitherworld, Lydia and “Beej,” as she’s prone to call him, team up for an unforgettable trip into the Great Beyond.

Despite appearing in Burton’s original film for only 17 minutes, Beetlejuice is a significant figure in pop culture, with fans carrying a torch for the demonic delinquent for over three decades. Beetlejuice and Lydia’s costumes are best-sellers every year at Spirit Halloween, and the couple even shows up during Halloween Horror Nights and at various cons throughout the year.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is already off to a great start at the box office with $12M+ in preview screenings. Analysts expect the sequel to rise to the top of the box office during the film’s opening weekend, kicking this crispy September off with a bang. Fans might as well enjoy their time with Beetlejuice and the gang while they can, as Burton doubts he’ll return to the franchise again.

While speaking with THR during the London premiere, the outlet asked Tim Burton about a possible Beetlejuice 3. “Well, if [the same] time frame goes on, I’ll be about 100,” Burton said. “So maybe. I doubt it.” As for why now was the right time for a Beetlejuice sequel, Burton explained that it all came down to Winona Ryder’s character. “Well, because the Lydia character (Ryder) interested me,” Burton said. “Getting older is where you start thinking about what happens in life. [She] starts as a cool teenager. Relationships… Do you have kids? What are they like? What do you like? How do you change? These are all things that I know and experience. So it felt more right to make this now, rather than back in, like, 1989.”

Producer Tommy Harper also recently said they have yet to discuss another sequel. “We haven’t talked about where it could go from here, we just talked about making one really good movie,” Harper said. “Make it the best you can, and then anything could happen.”

Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar find themselves back in the 90s for the new prequel series of Showtime’s hit serial killer show Dexter. Entertainment Weekly has now unveiled exclusive images from the upcoming follow-up. Here, you can see Dempsey’s new look as Captain Aaron Spencer, head of the Miami Metro Police Department’s homicide division. You also get a peek at Gellar’s look as Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief. Both characters are Dexter’s new bosses when he begins a forensics internship at Miami Metro PD.

Gellar humorously reflects, “It’s funny — I think it’s a different ’90s than what I knew because I was like, ‘I don’t remember this hairstyle.’ But I played a teenager in the ’90s, not an adult in a business environment, so maybe that is how people dressed in the ’90s. Maybe that is how they wore their hair. They wore a lot heavier makeup in the ’90s in Miami, oh boy. It’s a lot of blue eyeliner and blue mascara. It’s a lot of shoulder pads, and I like rocking a good pair of shoulder pads — it’s the closest I’ll ever get to looking like a linebacker.”

Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter in 1991 Miami, as a student transitioning into a serial killer in training. When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter finds solace and understanding in Harry. As his only confidant, he teaches Dexter a Code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die—all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

The prequel show will be available from Paramount+ with Showtime this December. The first season is expected to consist of 10 episodes. Production is currently underway in Miami.

I’m gonna give you to the count of ten to get your ugly, yella, no-good keister into a theater with Macaulay Culkin. Sure, it’s barely after Labor Day but that means it’s basically Halloween. And if Halloween is around the corner then it’s only a matter of time before Christmas decorations are on shelves. With that, it’s fair game to start thinking about our favorite holiday movies. (Look, I don’t make the rules here – I’m barely finished putting up my Killer Klowns animatronics.) And so, this holiday season, Culkin is headed to the road with his most famous movie, Home Alone, sitting in for a special screening and audience Q&A.

The event – hosted by Standing Ovations Live – is titled “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin”, with the Home Alone star sitting down to give fans insight into his on-set experiences and share some of his favorite behind-the-scenes stories. Those who pay a premium price – which could run you around $250 per ticket – will be treated to a post-screening photo op with Culkin. Something tells us you can get him to do that face…

The tour will find Macaulay Culkin sitting in for the Home Alone screening 14 times, which is about the average that most people should be watching it every year. The tour kicks off in Buffalo on November 30th and concludes on December 15th in Medford, Massachusetts, with other stops including Indianapolis, Detroit, Newark, and more. Presale for tickets is Monday, September 9th, with general sale happening on September 13th.

While this does sound like a fun night, it would have been even cooler to have more of the Home Alone cast than just Macaulay Culkin. How great would it be to also have Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern pop in, maybe even have Harry bite off those fingers like he promised? It would bring an even more heartwarming touch if Catherine O’Hara – who Culkin still keeps in touch with – turned up for an appearance. With such a good reception from part of the Christmas Vacation cast reuniting, at least one other cast member taking the stage would be more than welcome.

Some might be sending some thank you notes to Jimmy Fallon, as The Tonight Show is joining other late night shows by reducing the number of new shows per week to four, down from the traditional five.

For a while there, Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show were hanging onto something that some of the most prominent late night talk shows – Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert – had already committed to ditching. And while Fallon himself has plenty of haters, that he hung on for so long does show his determination in keeping the format’s tradition alive. But now, Friday episodes will be reruns.

But as we know, the world of late night television has changed dramatically. When the older guard of hosts moved on, that made room for the likes of Fallon for The Tonight Show (eventually…), meaning it was inevitable that they would try to capture a younger audience. With that, you got more games, the occasional lip sync battle and erratic laughter at the faintest hint of your guest making a joke. But late night talk shows have also had to battle with budding behemoths like social media. As such, it became more common for people to know what was going on with late night television via short-form methods such as TikTok and YouTube clips. If that’s how their shows are being consumed by a certain generation, what are they really missing if they cut back one night?

No doubt this is just the latest sign – along with Seth Meyers’ longtime house band, The 8G, being axed by NBC – that late night television will never be the same. As someone who grew up on Letterman and Leno, it all changed when they left town. But there was still a lot of excitement with the new guys. But now that that has spread thin in a way we’ve never seen, that doesn’t leave a lot of hope for any of the time slots. Of note, Taylor Tomlinson launched After Midnight earlier this year in the post-12:30 a.m. slot.

The latest entry in Kevin Costner’s four-part Western, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, and select outlets have weighed in on whether the film is a project of progress or a bumpy ride along a dusty trail. Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 launched to mixed reactions, with many from its Cannes debut saying the over-long film lacked punch despite being a love letter to the Western genre Costner loves so much. After Chapter 1 failed to find its audience in theaters, New Line/WB rushed the film to digital platforms, hoping to recover dollars from an unexpected upset. To Costner’s credit, he’s determined to see his Horizon project through, though the latest reactions to Chapter 2 aren’t likely to convince others to saddle up for the long haul.

In Leslie Felperin’s review for The Hollywood Reporter, Felperin says Costner’s second three-hour chapter suffers from many of the same problems as the original: “too much setup and not enough payoff; jagged editing that only highlights the lack of harmony between its disparate narrative strands; and cliché-tinged production values that often make it feel corny and old-fashioned, and not in a good way.”

However, Felperin notes that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 is more fun than the first. Still, Felperin notes that this feeling could result from Horizon Stockholm syndrome, as they watched the first entry the night before to prepare for the Venice screening. That’s a lot of any movie, especially something as weighted as Horizon. Felperin says Chapter 2 boasts solid female-driven storylines, with Sienna Miller and Georgia MacPhail given a chance to shine in their respective roles.

Disappointingly, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 appears to short-change the perspective of its Indigenous characters, lacking the perspective of their land getting invaded by settlers and forced to adapt to white society. Considering the American frontier was built upon the backs of these individuals, this lack of perspective feels like a gross oversight.

Meanwhile, Jessica Kiang of Variety says no one can deny Costner’s flare for the Western genre. His eye for detail from this era of filmmaking makes him an ideal storyteller for the territory, but that doesn’t stop Chapter 2 from becoming an “unwieldy and bewilderingly scattershot” sequel.

Kiang adds that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 “has its stirring, majestic set pieces such as a wagon burning or a barn-dance gunfight, and,  courtesy especially of J. Michael Muro’s grand cinematography, lots of gorgeously epic shots of the wagon train wending across bright, arid plains or the settlement that will, we imagine, become Horizon, gradually springing up from the dirt. But too often its best-imagined sequences take place on either side of inexplicable gaps, during which the emotional tempo has changed so completely, it leaves viewers forced to wonder if we somehow missed something. This herky-jerk rhythm only increases as we hurtle towards an ending which, once again without warning suddenly segues into a dialogue-free montage of clips from the forthcoming installment.”

Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 2 does not sound like it will attract new fans to Costner’s Western odyssey or impress those who were disappointed by the first entry. Still, it’s essential to make your own opinion if you’ve got three hours and ten minutes to spare. One could argue there are better ways to spend your movie-watching time, but if epic Westerns are your jam, you could find something special in Costner’s vision, others do not.

PLOT: In the aftermath of WW2, László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survived the holocaust, emigrates to America. While there, he gets a taste of the American dream from a wealthy benefactor (Guy Pearce), although success may carry a price too difficult to bear.

REVIEW: It would be fair to say there hasn’t been a movie like The Brutalist in about forty years. One-time actor Brady Corbet, who emerged as a director following The Childhood of a Leader and the underrated Vox Lux, makes movies in the vein of David Lean, with this telling a deeply personal story on an epic scale the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time. Shooting in 70mm VistaVision, The Brutalist is a three-and-a-half hour masterwork (with an intermission) that will go a long way towards establishing Corbett as one of the great modern directors. 

Indeed, The Brutalist is a full meal (I skipped all the TIFF screenings after it because I needed to digest what I’d seen for a while). It’s a whole lot of movie, but right from the opening scenes, where Adrien Brody’s Toth arrives at Ellis Island and gets a first glimpse at the Statue of Liberty as Daniel Blumberg’s masterful score blares, you know you’re in the hands of a master of his craft.

Adrien Brody has his best role since The Pianist as Toth, who’s survived the holocaust and now has to make do in an America that views him as an interloper. Going to work for his Americanized cousin (Alessandro Nivola), he gets lucky when he scores a gig designing a library at the urging of a Pennsylvania playboy (Joe Alwyn) who wants to surprise his father (Guy Pearce). When the patriarch sees the Bauhaus-style library, he has a fit but eventually sees the light and becomes Laszlo’s benefactor. 

However, the man, Harrison Lee Van Buren, is a tyrant, castigating Laszlo for employing a black man (Isaac De Bankolé) as his assistant and never letting him forget who his boss is. Brody and Pearce are electric opposite each other, with both clearly relishing sinking their teeth into truly great roles after years of toiling (at times) is smaller-scaled fare. Pearce, in particular, has never played a role like Van Buren, with him hiding his sadism behind a polished mid-Atlantic accent similar to the one used by John Huston when he played one of the screen’s great villains in Chinatown. Pearce plays him as a man of great charisma but little in the way of scruples. Yet, he’s not two-dimensional; he is also capable of great compassion, even if it comes with an asterisk. 

While Brody dominates The Brutalist as Laszlo toils for his place in post-war America, with the wounds of the holocaust driving him towards self-destruction through a horrible heroin habit, he has an amazing foil in this movie. Felicity Jones plays Laszlo’s wife, Erzsébet, who finally rejoins them (with their mute niece – played by Raffey Cassidy- in tow) after many years. While physically weak, with her wheelchair-bound, she’s portrayed as a woman of great intellectual and mental strength. She only shows up in the film’s second half (after its intermission), but she has a few of the film’s most arresting moments.

Corbet, who wrote the movie with his partner Mona Fastvold (an accomplished filmmaker in her own right), does an excellent job crafting an allegorical tale that can be applied to anyone who’s ever struggled to overcome personal trauma by creating meaningful work. Technically, this is impeccable, with cinematography by Lol Crawley that makes the most of the 70mm format and the locations filmed in Pennsylvania, Budapest, Italy and more. Truly, this is a sprawling work.

The Brutalist was the toast of the Venice Film Festival and is already taking TIFF by storm. If it comes out this year and it’s given a proper push, it would be reasonable to expect it to be a major Oscar contender in most categories, with acting nods a no-brainer for Brody, Pearce and Jones. However, it also demands to be seen theatrically, as more than any movie since Oppenheimer, it’s been designed to be enjoyed as a cinematic event – and those belong on the big screen. Hopefully, audiences can see it how intended, as this is pretty close to being a masterpiece.

UPDATE: According to Deadline, the Friday numbers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice are coming in much higher than anticipated. With a $42 million gross, Tim Burton’s sequel should be able to blow past $100 million for the weekend. The news is less rosy for the weekend’s other new release, A24’s The Front Room, which grossed a poor $600k on course for a $1.5 million opening. The controversial Reagan biopic starring Dennis Quaid seems to be performing surprisingly well, with it on track for a weekend in the $5 million range.

ORIGINAL: So often, long-belated sequels wind up as disappointments, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Arriving 36 years after the release of the original, the sequel has been receiving positive reviews, and it’s already become a box-office success, taking in $13 million in Thursday night previews. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is poised to have a wonderful opening weekend as well, with current projections looking at a $90-$95 million opening. It’s not quite the $145 million which was estimated earlier in the week, but still very impressive.

All this box office success is likely ringing the sequel bell, but director Tim Burton has already cast doubt on a possible Beetlejuice 3. “Well, if [the same] time frame goes on, I’ll be about 100,” Burton said. “So maybe. I doubt it.” As for why now was the right time for a Beetlejuice sequel, Burton explained that it all came down to Winona Ryder’s character. “Well, because the Lydia character (Ryder) interested me,” Burton said. “Getting older is where you start thinking about what happens in life. [She] starts as a cool teenager. Relationships… Do you have kids? What are they like? What do you like? How do you change? These are all things that I know and experience. So it felt more right to make this now, rather than back in, like, 1989.“

The film has been praised as a return to form for Burton, with our own Chris Bumbray calling it the director’s “most energetic, playful, and creative film in years.” He continued, “Truth be told, I was wary of a Beetlejuice sequel, as I figured they should leave well enough alone after thirty-six years. Fans fell in love with everyone’s favorite anti-authority high schooler when the film hit the big screen. While he spends the entire movie sticking to obnoxious authority figures, stealing from his own parents would have given the audience a different idea of our fun-loving hero.

All of this is on screen anyway, but this one scene really adds so many more layers to it. Ripley’s daughter would show up as the main character in the fantastic video game Alien: Isolation. While on a space station looking for clues to her mother’s whereabouts, another killing machine is let loose. The goal isn’t to win, but just to survive.

While someone could say this doesn’t drastically change the outcome of the movie, this deleted scene will make the viewer completely re-evaluate a character throughout the entire trilogy. That’s no small feat. In a deleted scene we see that Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen is a thorn in the side of Marshall Strickland. After a slight confrontation, Tannen shoots Marshall in the back in front of his young son. As he dies in his son’s arms, he tells him to always remember the word discipline. This would be passed down to his son, who would become the principal of Hill Valley High School. No wonder Strickland didn’t seem to like Biff Tannen all that much.

Alternate endings are their own kind of scenes. Obviously, ending the movie differently will completely change a movie. The stark difference between ending the movie on a down note and a more upbeat ending can be as simple as one small cut. Kevin Smith built his entire empire on the 1994 film Clerks, and the ending originally would have put the brakes on any future plans at The Quick Stop.

Originally the movie ended with Dante and Randal mending their friendship as the store closed. Dante stuck around to finish up and a robber came in to empty the register. Dante is shot and left bleeding behind the counter. Once the movie was picked up, it was suggested that he end the movie with Randal throwing the open sign in at Dante proclaiming, “You’re closed,” which is really the perfect way to end the day from hell for our main character. A jaunty song gives the close of the film the good feeling you need as the credits roll.

This slasher made it so you weren’t even safe in your sleep. Somehow, the story of a child killer would rocket Freddy Kruger to a pop culture icon, and we’d see kids dressed up as him for Halloween. Did we forget he was a child killer and implied sexual predator? Well, one scene in the film made things a lot more personal for Nancy and Freddy.

We already see that her parent’s marriage fell apart because of the secrets that they kept, but if a deleted scene was kept, we’d know there was a lot more to all of it. When Nancy’s mom shows her that she still has Freddy’s glove in their furnace, originally, this is where we would have learned that Nancy used to have a brother. She was little when it happened, so she forgot, but her older brother was killed by Freddy. Now things suddenly jump into focus.

Nancy’s dad is a cop. The explanation is that a cop screwed up, and Freddy got off due to a loophole. Does Nancy’s mom blame her father for the screw-up? Possibly. They were never able to move past it, and the death of their firstborn just destroyed their marriage. It’s suddenly very personal. Freddy didn’t just give her nightmares, he took her entire family away from her. She was already upset that her friends were dying. Now she sees he has ruined her entire life.

The third installment in George Lucas’ Star Wars trilogy seemed to wrap up all the storylines we had been seeing since the 1977 original film. One thread that was kind of left hanging is why Obi-Wan never told Luke that Darth Vader was his father. Since then, it has been explored many times over, but we almost found out way earlier.

In a deleted scene, Yoda reveals before his death that Obi-Wan actually wanted to tell Luke much sooner. Maybe even before the original film took place. Yoda instructed him not to. New Star Wars material shows that the Jedi may not have been as pure as we originally thought. Back in Return Of The Jedi, it is possible they were trying not to tarnish their reputation. Taking this out leaves Yoda as a wise Jedi master rather than someone who manipulates situations to keep questions from being asked.

Somehow, a Roger Corman B-Movie became a smash stage musical, and a theatrical film was quickly to follow. When fans went and saw the movie, they learned it had a drastically different ending. We see Seymour defeat Audrey II, and he ends up happily married to the original Audrey. We do get a quick wink that not everything is as cleaned up as we thought when we see a new plant in front of their house.

In the film, they originally planned to show something more akin to how the stage play ends. The plants win! The original Audrey dies and is fed to her plant successor. Seymour allows himself to be eaten out of guilt. Then, we are shown a wild montage of a bunch of plants running amok through New York as they have grown to kaiju size. Humans are doomed and the last image is a plant bursting through the movie screen towards the audience.

When the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy was released in theaters, it was a spectacle to behold. Peter Jackson brought pure magic to the screen and brought the books to life. While much of what was shown was from Tolkien’s books, a few things were invented for the films. Most of them didn’t detract too much from their source material, but one altered scene bothered the director, so it was digitally changed in post-production.

Aragorn was originally going to have a sword fight with the physical manifestation of Sauron in the final battle. As Gandalf and the army he has assembled battle the forces of Sauron, he appears in physical form only for Aragorn to attempt to slay him. In the end, the director felt this detracted too much from the true name of the quest, so he altered it, and instead, Aragorn now fights a large troll. Probably smart to keep Sauron more of an overseeing presence.

The third adaptation of the book I Am Legend by Richard Matheson had a few different endings they tried out. The one that actually got closer to the idea of the book but was still pretty different had Smith’s character finally seeing the enemy’s point of view. When the creatures raid his home, he finally realizes they are there to save the female creature he had been running experiments on. He sees that in their eyes, he is the monster that has been kidnapping and experimenting on them.

Rumors have been swirling about there being a sequel to the film starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan. Akiva Goldsman has said that they are planning on continuing the sequel from the alternate ending rather than what audiences saw in the theatrical version.  It’s an interesting idea, but will that work?

Bryan Carey

Bryan Carey is an artist and pop culture enthusiast with a particular passion for 80’s & 90’s film and television. Specializing primarily in digital illustration with a focus on bold colors and textures, his work can regularly be found at Southern California’s largest pop culture curator Hero Complex Gallery as well as the pages of art and entertainment related books from popular publishers such as Printed In Blood.

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
BRYAN:
My father and grandfather were both artists. My aunt is an artist. My daughter is an artist. Almost everyone in my family is an artist, musician or creative of some kind so I guess it’s in the blood. When I was young, and before music came along, all I was really good at was drawing. Mostly pencil. I did what most young artists do and tried to redraw all my favorite comic covers, characters and panels and would sometimes even create my own. I was a huge comic collector and I still have all of my childhood comics to this day! All through school I was known as “that kid that draws really good” and any time there was a project or book report that I could use as an excuse to draw something, I would. So often that my teachers would tell me I’d be “drawing for Disney someday” haha.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?Drew Struzan, John Alvin, Tom Chantrell, Bob Peak, Tom Jung, Richard Amsel, Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Alex Ross, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane and Erik Larsen. As it’s been said before I’m sure, I only knew a few of their names at the time, but their work was as imprinted on me as the movies and comics themselves.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?First, there’s the artists who’s posters I initially found and collected that inspired me to get back into art: Gary Pullin, Jason Edmiston, Phantom City Creative, WBYK(Sonny & Biddy), Matt Ryan Tobin, Laurent Durieux, Vance Kelly, Olly Moss, Matt Taylor, Ken Taylor, Tyler Stout, Dan Mumford, Tom Whalen, Patrick Connan and pretty much all the artists that kicked down the alternative movie poster doors for the rest of us circa 2010-2015. Most, if not all of these artists used or still use vivid colors and bold line work and textures or any combination thereof. All things I tend to love in pop culture art.

Then there’s the artists who I discovered after getting back into art myself. Many of whom are further down the road than I am, so to speak, and doing inspiring work:Courtney Autumn Martin, Chris Koehler, Luke Preece, Ryan Smallman, Tom Walker, David Henry Lantz, Barret Chapman, Dan Schlitzkus, Dakota Randall, Steven Luros Holliday, Justin Froning, Benedict Woodhead..

Finally, there’s the artists I tend to chat with most often about this whole art endeavor who are in a similar place to me: Bryan Johnson, John Dunn, Shannon Burton, Julián Rodríguez, Laura Emilie Bernard, Kevin Bravo.

What advice would you have for budding artists today?Boy, there’s probably a million answers to that question and I certainly don’t think I’m the most qualified person to be handing out advise as I’m still learning the ropes myself, but if I had to say something I’d say try not to compare. Everyone is on their own path and everyone’s path looks a little different. Comparing style or success almost always leads to feelings of defeat and a loss of passion in my experience, which only slows you down. Just stay focused on your goals, put in the work and be patient. It’ll come.

One other piece of advice I’ve always loved is from the legendary Steve Martin; “Be undeniably good”. Now, most of us are still a long ways off from that, but I do believe that you’ll get a hell of a lot farther aiming for that benchmark than you will asking yourself “why them, not me?”. If you just keep putting in the work, at some point, it will be impossible to ignore you.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?Well, given my work/family/art balance, I try not to over commit myself. My wife and daughter are incredibly patient and supportive and, quite frankly, I couldn’t do this without them so in the interest of everyones sanity, I try to keep things as loose and tentative as possible. That said, I’m almost always working on something for Hero Complex Gallery or fun new art book contributions and projects. I’m also hoping to start tabling at conventions in the not too distant future so I’ll be gearing up for that and making some fun things to bring along real soon! If nothing else, I’m pretty good about keeping my website and social media updated on what’s coming up so keep a lookout!

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?Man, another loaded one! Well, I would say my favorite movie of all time probably alternates between Carpenter’s The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China and Alien depending on my mood. Classics like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, The Karate Kid, Rocky, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Gremlins, The Goonies and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also all have a special place in my heart, but with that said, I’m a sucker for just about any 80’s & 90’s action/horror/scifi cult classics you can think of. The Burbs, Adventures in Babysitting, Nothing but Trouble, The Running Man, Little Monsters, The Gate, The Blob… this list could go on forever!

As far as TV, and this will come as no surprise I’m sure, I love Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, Glow and any documentaries about the stuff I grew up on. And for non nostalgic stuff, I really enjoyed True Detective, Ozark and Breaking Bad.

Volunteers from Cagliari are spearheading a movement to eliminate drug abuse in southeastern Sardinia.

Sardinia, Italy, April 15, 2016 (Newswire.com) - The Sardinia chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World carry out a relentless campaign to combat drug abuse and addiction. Their purpose is to help youth decide to live drug-free by presenting them factual information on the devastating effects of these substances. 

They routinely hold drug prevention activities in 11 municipalities throughout southeastern Sardinia. A dozen volunteers staged 16 events over the last four weeks, reaching more than 5,000 people with The Truth About Drugs booklets. And although it is hard to assess the results, there were fewer arrests in the areas where they held their activities—a strange coincidence perhaps but their work to increase awareness on this critical subject may have been a factor.

One of the volunteers stated what drives them is the wish to help youth live up to their potential, free from the debilitating consequences of drug abuse. They find that simply sharing their drug prevention materials gives the community renewed confidence that things can change. If everyone were to become involved, not only could the problems connected to drug abuse be resolved, it would also reduce crime, accidents, and many other serious social ramifications.

Volunteers on six continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the truth about drugs.

Still, it’s less busy than the film’s previous date, which would have found it opening alongside six other movies, including the highly anticipated Smile 2.

Gibson’s next directorial outing could be the long-awaited Lethal Weapon 5. “I’m going to direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series. You know, Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away. He was a good friend, and he kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one,” Gibson said earlier this summer. “It’ll be an honor for me to do that. He [Richard Donner] had gotten a fair way into the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there, and we kept poking at it, working at it a little. I’m pretty happy with it, it’s good, I had a lot of fun doing it.“
