Finnish Printmaker Launches Ducktales and Bunny Trails Designer Art Collection

Press Release

Jul 4, 2016

Finland native, Mirka Hokkanen, launches the Ducktales and Bunny Trails Designer Art Collection consisting of original linocut prints, wood engravings and paintings.

Mirka Hokkanen’s Ducktales and Bunny Trails Designer Art Collection will consist of acrylic paintings: Donald, Daisy, and Hewey, Dewey, Louie, two preening ducks, and a piece with three ducks on the run from proverbial mischief, all on layered backgrounds created in stages with masking techniques. A reduction linocut series: The Bather (Daisy), a preening duck, and two resting rabbits, Mr. Minty Fresh, and Mrs. Rosy Meadow, in shades of mint and rose quartz. A wood engraving of ducks bathing beside a pond, Morning bath at Gabbard Park. And a series of greeting cards bearing the artistic images described above.

Hokkanen still uses centuries old methods to first create her designs in endgrain wood and then prints them on paper with ink. Her linocut pieces are similarly created using a newer material, linoleum, allowing for less detail, but larger prints. Reduction linocuts enable multiple colors to be printed from the same linoleum, by carving and printing and then recarving the same block to create the next color to print. The original image is destroyed, and editions by nature are limited to how many were printed from the first color run.

The wood engraving technique was invented in England at the end of the 18th century. The tools I use today are the same as they originally used – a sharp engravers burin and an end grain piece of wood. The blocks are hand inked and printed on paper at my studio Pica Doodle Press.

What Hokkanen creates comes from life as only she observes it. Little sublime moments; strangely sobering, and summer memories of a lakeside cottage in her homeland of Finland.
